It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Chanhassen is from 1851 when it was called "Haven" on a map made by John Jacob Astor. In 1865, James Hildebrandt donated land to establish a school in Chanhassen which would serve as the nucleus for what would become Chanhassen School District #2 (later Chanhassen School District #1). The community began to grow rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of Routes 94 and 56. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in Chanhassen. In 1907, Chanhassen became part of the nearby city of Minneapolis through an agreement between both cities. At this time, most residents lived outside of town on large farms or on properties within walking distance of their homes. However, with rapid growth and demands for space within town limits, many residents chose to move into newly built houses or apartments within town limits during this time period. During World War II,Chanhassen became one of several American towns located along the water's edge near Dundee Naval Base because it was thought that these towns would be targets if war came home America's way like Europe had been during World War I. Consequently, many businesses closed down due to lack of business opportunities after Pearl Harbor; however, some continued until well into 1946 despite being threatened with closure again should war break out again In 1948 also-ran Mayor Harry Heineman unsuccessfully ran against incumbent mayor Floyd Olson for his third term as mayor and decided not run again instead concentrating his efforts on running for state office After Heineman’s election as state representative in 1949 he announced his candidacy for mayoralty but only received 1% support from registered voters while Olson got more than 4 times that amount . This led other community leaders such as Hubert Humphrey who represented Ramsey County Third Congressional District (to then include all southern Twin Cities suburbs) to form an anti-Heineman coalition pledging not to back him if he ran against Olson . As a result Mayor Olson was reelected unopposed that year After seeing how popular Heineman had become among Minnesotans he decided not run for reelection in 1953
Chanhassen is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Chanhassen County. The population was 24,088 at the 2010 census. It is a rural town located on the western edge of Ramsey County, between Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan areas. Chanhassen is home to many large agricultural operations, including Monsanto and DuPont's polyester plant originally built in 1915 as a subsidiary of these two companies; Chanhassen has also been known for its cheese industry since at least the early 20th century. The first European settler in what is now Chanhassen was Nicholas Stromeyer, who arrived there on November 15, 1821 from Wisconsin with his family; he named it after himself and his brother-in-law Samuel Hinman (a local surveyor). Naming rights were granted to Hinman in 1825 by surveyor John Prentice; until this point all land within present day Chanhassen had been called "Stromeyer Township." In 1847, Pierre Sainte-Croix became Possessoner of part of what are now Sauk County west of present day Chanhassen; this made him sole proprietor and titular head Indian Agent for that area which was then east of present day Bloomington along with part or all of Dakota Territory (the portion still lying within Present Day Sauk County). On January 1, 1849, when Indian agent Aaron Rice resigned after five years service due to illness, Sainte-Croix took over as acting agent until someone could be found to fill the position permanently - this never happened because no one wanted to take on such an important post. On July 26, 1861 Minnesota became a state; however much like other frontier posts throughout America at that time Dakota Territory continued existing as an unorganized area separate from the organized state government despite being promised full legal status by territorial lawmakers during their rush into becoming republics on November 3rd of that year following Michigan's admission into Confederation three days earlier. This left Dakota Territory completely without any form of governance or law enforcement outside the hands (and often badgered)of Sioux Chief Rosebud Black Cloud aka Red Cloud whose bandidry raids frequently terrorized settlers living insideMinnesota boundaries southward towards Duluth while also raiding settlements northward into Wisconsin & Illinois across Nebraska bordering Iowa (& later Kansas) creating yet another problem for those living insideMinnesota: how were they supposed to protect themselves against either hostile indigenous people living near their border or raiders coming through their territory looking for potential new markets? As much as some may have wanted & needed help from officialdom - especially given how constantly Frontier life was changing both geographically & politically due numerous treaties being signed concluding various peace negotiations leading up to Federation etc...none felt particularly comfortable/safe taking on such an important task themselves let alone knowing about or having access to resources necessary for doing so...it wasn't until 1862 when Governor Julius Knapp created The Department Of Public Safety consisting solelyof devoted citizens employed full time by The State government responsible onlyfor securing public safety within our own borders instead OF ANY OTHER GOVERNMENTS INTERESTED IN THEIR RESPECTIVE TERRITORY ie: The Army& Navy...that things started getting better but they would still continue going wrong eventually leading up TO THE Civil War! Chanhassen residents generally follow Lutheranism although there are small numbers unaffiliated with any religion. Education levels range from high school graduation rates above 70% down gently slope into obscurity below 50%. Employment opportunities range from low paying retail jobs around town right up through highly skilled professional positions at nearby businesses like Monsanto & DuPont where employees typically enjoy benefits package similar to those enjoyed by middle class professionals elsewhere in America while still having control over their work environment including qualified management team--something not available anywhere else in North America!
