People used the river for fishing, water management, and transportation purposes. The early settlers who arrived in this area during the 1800s built homes on high bluffs overlooking the river. They used these same hills as grazing land for their livestock and also hunted big game such as deer, bear, moose,and wolf. Today's residents of Elk River are descendants of these early settlers. They continue to use their land for agricultural purposes as well as hunting and fishing opportunities; however, they have also made some additions to their community including new housing developments and businesses that cater to tourists who visit Minneapolis or other nearby towns/cities during vacation periods.

This rifle sight featured two rotating circles that could be adjusted independently from one another in order to achieve better accuracy when shooting at close range targets such as soldiers moving across a battlefield under fire (thus becoming known as "open iron sights").
