A year later anotherExploration Expedition under Lieutenant David Ewing found 11 more encampments along this stretch ofthe river but they never posed any great threat to American settlers since they were all only inhabited by fur traders travelling through this area at various times during their expeditions. At some point after these early explorations there must have been a large influx of Canadian settlers into this area as well because within 10 yearsnearly all Canadian settlements had been founded along either side ofthe Elk River! In 1882 General George Crook commandeered a steamboat operating outof Duluth and began delivering goods upriver to different settlements alongthe Elk River including those established by lumber barons such as Jens Jacobsen and Ole Sørensen. This new transportation system allowed farmers to sell their products directly to consumers rather than waiting for transport downriverby boatman or hauling them overland across country! By 1895 over 1 million pounds (450,000 kg)of merchandise had been transported downriver annually!
