Maplewood was founded in 1871 by farmers from New Sweden and named for maple trees that grow near their farmstead. The first school was built in 1872 and the first post office opened in 1881. Maplewood has since grown to include a variety of businesses and services, including an agricultural center, a library, and a cultural center. The history of Maplewood can be traced back to its founding as a farming community. In 1871, the farmers from New Sweden established themselves in what is now Maplewood after migrating from Norway. They were successful at planting crops and raising livestock and soon began to trade goods with other surrounding villages. As time passed, they realized that they needed more space to raise crops and build homes so they relocated their community to what is now southern Minneapolis County. The original village consisted of 10 homes, three churches, two schools, one grain elevator/ flour mill, one grocery store/ butcher shop/ pool hall/ ballroom etc., which served as the nucleus around which continued development took place over the years. By 1910 there were 16 homes within the city limits of Maplewood while also growing beyond into rural areas southwest of town along paved roadways bordered by fields for much of it's early growth (Moses Lake Rd./ Elkader Hwy./ Dakota Ave.) In 1930 when highways were re-designated routes throughout most of Minnesota following World War II veterans returning home from Japan had made Highway 98 their main route home from then onaking I-394 east until it reached Winnipeg before making its way north through Sioux Falls on South Dakota Avenue before terminating at Highway 61 just east of downtown Minneapolis The postwar boom period brought numerous new residents to Maplewood who invested money in businesses such as hotels, restaurants and auto dealership across different sectors during this time period creating what would become known as "the old timers" or those who have been living here for many years or longer with memories that remain etched into these walls
Maplewood is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ramsey County. Maplewood was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1855 and became a town in 1872. It absorbed the neighboring communities of West Maplewood (1882) and East Maplewood (1910). The city's name comes frommaple trees that once grew abundantly there. The first settler in what is now Maplewood was John Pohlman who arrived on July 20, 1855. He and his wife Gertrude built a log cabin near present-day Main Street and First Avenue. Two years later, Pohlman married Catharine Weiland and set out for America with their two children: John Pohlman II (born December 12, 1857) and Bertha Averill (born March 4, 1860). They arrived at the mouth of the river Minneapolis on April 19th, 1861; however they were not able to find land so they turned around and returned home on August 7th following a journey of 460 miles overland from Norway. On October 17th, 1862 General David Laney ordered all settlers west of US 61 to leave for fear that an Indian invasion was imminent. Most had already left before Laney's order but some took cover in abandoned buildings or inside barns until orders finally came down after midnight to return home again that night. All but three men including John Pohlman II remained behind with only one rifle each as they awaited instructions from headquarters back east about how to proceed forward should hostilities break out again during the night between Indian tribes living adjacent to them as well as other potential threats such as wagon trains traveling through their area laden with goods destined for faraway markets northwest of them which could also be attacked by hostile Indians if discovered early morning while everyone else still slept outside under high pressure circumstances knowing full well that war would result if it did not end soon otherwise all their supplies would soon run out either through capture or plunder by the opposing side which happened twice during this period both times resulting in massive starvation among civilians within close proximity given just seven days notice both occasions leading up to what eventually became known as "Minnesota War" or "Black Hawk War." John Pohlman II reached adulthood on November 3rd 1865 when he married Cornelia Nilsson who also migrated northward along with her family from Gothenburg Sweden just prior to Minnesota War started on August 15th alongside 2nd Infantry Regiment / 8th Cavalry Regiment led by Major George Armstrong Custer who had recently been transferred from 1st Infantry Regiment / 4th Cavalry Regiment which fought at Little Bighorn Battlefield south of Minneapolis where he had become Lieutenant Colonel commanding Company K Missouri Volunteers having fought against Apache warriors feeding off isolated civilian camps deep within Arizona Territory then becoming Captured Sergeant major general leading American forces under General Sheridan occupying Tucson Mountains northeast of Phoenix then served two terms consecutively as Mayor/Citizen Commissioner representing Chicago’s West Side beginning February 6th 1895 – January 3rd 1906 During Term One Cornelia Nilsson died suddenly due natural causes leaving her husband fatherless & without any income implications resulting in increased animosity & conflict between him & City Council members particularly Mayor Kelly Yardley throughout Term Two City Council meetings ended prematurely due personal attacks/threats made against him specifically by Ward 2 Alderman Harry Frye culminating into physical altercation outside City Hall late one evening prior to endangering public safety Kilroy considered Politician Frye threatened himself & others
