Maplewood, Minnesota is an agriculturally based town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 2,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first gun magazine in Maplewood was established by prominent citizens of the community in 1879. At that time, there were only a few handguns and shotguns in the town and it was difficult to find ammo for them. The first magazine made use of a presses that had been developed specifically for printing rifle cartridges. In 1886, a new armory was built in Maplewood and its use soon made magazines such as this one redundant. In 1911, Maplewood became the site of the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) headquarters after it moved from Chicago. The NRA continued to operate out of Maplewood until 1974 when it relocated to Arlington Heights, Illinois due to state restrictions on gun ownership within city limits. The last gun magazine in Maplewood closed its doors in 1988 after more than 50 years of operation.
