Maplewood, Minnesota is a small town located in the southwest corner of Minnesota. The population was 1,814 as of the 2010 census. Maplewood has been inhabited by Native Americans for over a millennium and the first European to visit the area was French trader Pierre Dorion in 1758. The first post office in Maplewood was established in 1855. The town took its name from General James Kossuth's home village of Maplehurst, Nova Scotia. In 1885, a railroad station was built and named after General George Armstrong Custer during his final attempt to cross the US-Canada border. In 1925, Maplewood voted to become an incorporated city with its own government and police department. The decision followed years of petitioning by citizens. The name Maplewood comes from two maple trees that were found on nearby farmsteads. The first settlers arrived in 1868 and started farming what is now Maplewood Township.
