The first post office was established in 1838 and it continued to be called Worthington until it changed its name toude Saint Paul on July 1, 1857. In 1870, about three-quarters of the people living here were Dutch Immigrants from Rotterdam who had come overland through Canada's Manitoba province and then turned westward intoMinnesota Territory. As one result of this waves of immigrants and their descendants coming to what would become Worthington, there are many Dutch surnames still present today such as de Valk (Van der Valk), De Wever (De Wilde), Brinkman (Brinkman), Klinkenberg (Klinkenberg), Pohlmeyer (Pohlmeyer). There also are several German surnames present including Weber (Weber) and Groteveld (Groteveld). In 1907 when St. Paul became a city Limits settlement with an overlay of rural Hennepin County land east of downtown on both sides of Lyndale Avenue south of Interstate 35E, that created new boundaries for what would later become Worthington Township which lay within City Limits but formed its own government with its own sheriff and police department while residents continued to call their township home even though they were inside City Limits. This annexation by St.Paul gave birth to Worthington's claim as being "the Twin Cities' oldest continuously inhabited town" although other towns withinHennepin County date back to at least 1795 when traders from Holland settled near Present Day Blooming Prairie

In 1860, the town had six businesses and thirty-six residents. By 1865, Worthington had a population of one hundred and fifty-four people. In 1870, the town had eleven businesses and seventy-five residents. In 1880, Worthington had thirteen businesses and ninety-seven residents. By 1890, WorthingTON had twenty-one businesses and one hundred eighty-eight residents. In 1912, the city of Minneapolis annexed part of Worthington to form its new city limits
