It reopened as an elementary school after being sold by its previous owner to the township board of education on August 15, 1979 who used it as their primary facility until 1993 when they replaced it with a new library/community center complex which still serves as one of town's most important assets today. On January 1st 1907, James Averill Worthington married Gertrude Beardsley at his home on Main Street east of town limits where they resided until her death some years later at age seventy-eight following a long and healthy life spentAmong other things she founded or endowed several charities including: "The Gertrude Beardsley Scholarship for Girls" (later renamed "The Gertrude Averill WorthingTON Scholarship"), "Progressive Women's Club", "Gertrude Averill Worcester House" "(now owned by Wrightson University)". James Averill also founded or endowed several businesses including: JMW Incorporated (a lumber company), Wagon Wheel Manufacturing Company (a wagon wheel workshop), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) and many others through his foundation such as; Anheuser Busch BreweryMinnesota branch - now known as Tapatio Fina; Girdersleeve Hospitality Management Company - now known as Epicentre Hospitality Management; Hennepin County Agricultural Society - now known as Agri-Tech Solutions USA INC.; The Alexan Dormitory & Learning Center at Iron Heights Technical College - now known as Iron Heights Academy; Oneida Valley District High School - currently OpenSchools Incorporated). Worthington was founded in 1855 by George Worthington and his wife Christina. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, oats, and potatoes. In 1858, the town was renamed to Worthington after General James A. Worthington, a Union general during the American Civil War. The population of Worthington increased rapidly from its initial 30 residents in 1855 to 100 in 1860. By 1870, the town had a school and two stores. In 1875, the first railroad line arrived in Worthington and led to rapid growth in the town as people traveled to bring goods back to their homes. In 1904, the first post office was built at what is now Main Street. In 1916, the town became a city and changed its name once again to Worthington City.
