The first settler to arrive in what would become Worthington was Ole Bergquist from Denmark in 1835. Bergquist named his new town after his home country, Zealand (now Oslo). He also built a log cabin near present-day Old Highway 6 and Main Street for himself and his family. By 1840, other families had moved into the area and started to build homes. In 1849, local businessman John Anderson donated land to make Worthington an incorporated village under the name "Worthington." A post office called "Worthington" was established there on October 1, 1851; it remained in operation until it was discontinued on January 15, 1907. In 1865, naturalist George Bird Wright came to Minnesota and made friends with some of these early settlers including Ole Bergquist and John Anderson at their home on Second Street where he stopped for dinner one night while travelling through Morristown overland from Illinois.[1] Wright became interested in nature conservation and decided to come back east to study animals at Cornell University before returning westward across America in 1870[2]. After spending time visiting various states along the way he settled down permanently in New York City that year with his wife Clara Barton Wright that he had met when she accompanied him on his trip around America[3]. After living for several years within walking distance of each other they decided to move back together to Morrison County where they would continue living until her death fifteen years later[4][5] On July 2nd 1890 Clara Barton Wright married Morris Hunt[6] which resulted in them moving back upstate again this time settling down at 7th Avenue South between Third Street South & Fourth Street North where they would remain until her death two years later[7][8]. Thereafter their children were raised by their mother who died young without any children being born so she bequeathed their share of her estate including $10 000 cash specifically towards education for future generations as well as setting aside another $500 000 towards environmental conservation efforts over 25 years).[9][10] In total Clara Barton Wright left behind an estate valued at $223 million ($ today: $269 million)[11]: note: This includes both her personal money (the bulk) as well as what she has designated for education purposes - this number will grow relatively slowly but steadily over time given Mrs Bennett's wishes!
