Pearl, Mississippi is a small town in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The population was 1,948 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lauderdale County. The town was founded in 1877 by John Dickey and his family. Dickey built a log cabin on the current site of Pearl on an bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. He named it after his native state of Illinois and his daughter, Pearl Dickey. The first post office in Pearl opened in 1879. By 1880, there were only nine residents living in the town. In 1885, Jensie Ladd became the first female voter in Lauderdale County when she cast her ballot for sheriff at a courthouse election. In 1898, Evelyn Fenton married Jensie's brother-in-law Burt Fenton and they moved to Pearll to live with him and their two children while he ran a sawmill nearby. In 1902, Jensie gave birth to another daughter before moving back to Illinois with her husband and child later that year. In 1907, pearl started construction of what would become the first Irene School which served as both a daycare center for local farmers and as a public school for students from neighboring towns until it closed its doors in 1962 because of budgetary constraints; during its time as a public school it offered classes fromgrades K-8th gradeinderryinderryclusiveofaonehourperiodforkindergartenand1and1/2hoursforsecondgradeandup). That same year saw new construction begin in nearby Gulfport which would later become known as Tiger Bayou City During the 21st century, pearl has experienced significant growth with new development taking place including a Walmart store and restaurant addition in 2000-2001; an increase in manufacturing jobs associated with offshore oil production; and steady tourism from its growing population base that includes both locals and visitors from inland Mississippi

The pearl industry declined in the early 20th century, but steady growth resumed in the late 1920s and into the 1930s as a result of increased demand from Europe for pearl products. Pearl continued to grow rapidly through World War II until it peaked in 1951 with a population of over 10,000 people. Afterward, rapid declines followed as trade contracted and labor costs rose. By 1970, Pearls population had fallen to fewer than 1,000 people and it ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality altogether by 1980.
