Pearl, Mississippi is a small town located in the south central part of Mississippi. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. The Pearl community is bordered by Meridian to the north, Gulfportto the east, and Tishomingo to the west. It has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The town was founded in 1868 by Andrew Mellon and named for his wife, pearl (a name meaning "whiteness"). Mellon had come from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1851 and started working as a banker in Mobile, Alabama before moving to Meridian in 1865. He donated land for a town site on which Pearl would be built. The first settler was John Henson who arrived about 1871. The first school was built in 1870 and became known as the Central School House. The first post office opened in 1872 and continued serving until 1915 when it changed its name to Pearl Post Office because of its location within the town limits only. A store opened on Main Street in 1886 which became known as “The Ruby Store” because of its red brick facade which still stands today. In 1902 a Baptist church was built on West Park Avenue between what is now First Avenue South and Second Avenue South. This church served as the primary means of worship for many years until it burned down in 2006-2007 due to firecode violations In 1907 there were just four residents living within spitting distance of each other: Andrew Mellon’s house on Main Street; Joe Dawson’s home on Front Street; Mrs Smith’s home across from her grocery store off Hogan Road; and Gertrude Poe’s home off Meetinghouse Road near Patton Boulevard Today there are over 100 people living close together using various transportation methods including carspooling/ Ride-sharing/Car sharing etc….Today Pearl has taken strides forward becoming an exciting city with great potential! Recently they annexed into Jackson County! There have been several notable events that have occurred throughout history tied closely with pearls such as being placed second during World War II behind Japan due to production shortages caused by American entry into that conflict; being awarded two Presidential Medals of Freedom (the first ever awarded out of Mississippi); being designated “Mississippi's Most Diverse City"; experiencing significant growth following Katrina along with many new businesses popping up all around town specifically around Pearl Harbor Nightclub & Grill - one such business having recently received accolade from Forbes Magazine as one of America's Top 10 LGBT Businesses; hosting numerous state fairs annually like State Fair Park & Agricultural Showgrounds including theMississippi State Fair held every year since 1978 & more recently also holding MissisipPI's Annual Pumpkinfest this past October where tens thousands+ visitors participated

In the early 1800s, Pearl was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Many slaves who were able to escape to freedom used Pearl as a safe haven. The town also became known for its seafood, which was very popular in the 1840s and 1850s.
