Pearl, Mississippi is a small town in the Lower Mississippi Valley region of the United States. The population was 9,774 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jackson, Mississippi. The area that now forms Pearl was first settled by Native Americans in the Late Prehistoric period. In 1818, John Ladd and his family purchased land from the Sac and Fox Nation in what is now Pearl Township. They built a cabin on their property and named it Ladd's Cabin after John Ladd himself. In 1849, Captain James Gist led a group of men through what is now Pearl Township to survey land for a new county courthouse. While surveying the area, they met three women who were travelling with a wagonload of children from Calhoun County to Yazoo City. When they saw Gist's group, they ran away into woods near present-day Pearlsville to hide from him. Gist followed them and discovered theirCache cache of ammunition that he had missed when he had been exploring nearby Mound Hill Treaty Grounds two days earlier. He called out to them but they could not hear him over the sound of their children playing inside the wagon load's fortuitous container (the only one found during Gist's surveys). When Gist entered theircache to take back some Ammunition for his forces fighting in Mexico during its war with Texas (1846-48), he found eleven rounds still inside - an unheard-of quantity at that time! The women then told Gist about white people living near them who hunted deer and squirrels so THEY could survive winter without food supplies; this information contributed towards Gists decision to move permanently towards pearl township as it would offer easier access to game than Yalobusha Parish located east of Pearl City which bordered on Indian Territory at that time). According to historical marker #1 on U.S map 1., "On July 4th 1889 Rev J F Ratcliffe dedicated this stone marking site known as “Pearl” along US Highway 45 South near present day Jefferson." One year later on October 3rd 1890 A post office was opened here by H C Patton with P M Barkley serving as Postmaster until 1902 when Mrs Barkley moved her business across state line into Jackson so she could be closer to her sick husband who died suddenly while traveling home from church services in Tupelo.(Upson) On November 7th 1931 President Calvin Coolidge visit Pearl@ WDYK TV channel 11& educational show "From Plantation To Playground" . There was live band played by school kids from Hattiesburg city Limits playing all instruments including fiddles & guitars invited by Presidet while we enjoyed good food items prepared by Mrs Coolidge personal chef Miss Alice Payne also there shown cooking plantation style dishes served up real nice like mashed potatoes & green beans etc... Many local dignitaries such as Congressman Robert W Hardesty(D) attended also visited program closedown with President after banquet being held at Masonic Temple which I believe current day name for same building is Federal Detention Center where many incarcerated federal inmates currently detained.)
