The town experienced significant progress through World War II when it became home to several factories manufacturing munitions such as Fordson’s Pulp Paper Mill and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Plant which produced tires for American military vehicles used all over Europe and Japan during this time period. After World War II ended, many businesses closed or changed hands as local entrepreneurs attempted unsuccessfully to revive business throughout the 1970s and 1980s before eventually succumbing in 1990 following economic declines throughout much of Gulf South America during that decade-long recession known as “the lost decade”.
