He named his company “Dolphusshooting Firearms Company” and began producing shotguns with barrels of up to eighteen inches long. In 1904, he opened a brick-and-mortar store in Yazoo City and began selling handguns as well as shotguns and rifles. By 1912, Dolphusshooting Firearms Company had become the leading handgun manufacturer in Mississippi. From 1912 to 1916, it produced over 250 pistols including some of the most famous brands such as Colt 1911s and Smith & Wesson Model 10s

Yazoo City, Mississippi was founded in 1819 by J.D. Payne and Thomas Prentice as a trading post on the Yazoo River. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on the river's floodplain and its strategic position as a crossroads for travel between Mobile and Memphis. In 1835, Yazoo City became an official city under the name of Jackson after Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States. The city experienced rapid growth during the early years of the 20th century, thanks to its strategic location, access to water resources, and growing population. However, World War II caused significant damage to Yazoo City and its infrastructure, which led to decreased development until the late 1990s when efforts began to revive the city as a tourist destination. During slavery, Yazoo City was one of several slave-owning communities in Mississippi that functioned as economic hubs for their region. Slavery ended in 1865 when General Robert Ewell's cavalry Operation Crossroads freed all slaves in Mississippi except those within 100 miles of Mobile Bayou. After Reconstruction ended with African Americans re-enfranchised following passage of The 14th Amendment, Yazoo City experienced increased white migration into its boundaries from Tennessee and other parts of Mississippi due to new opportunities available in newly desegregated America. However, white flight did not translate into increased development or economic opportunity for black Mississippians; instead, industry increasingly centered around cotton production throughout much of southern Mississippi during this time period. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Yazoo City were Native American hunter-gatherers who migrated through present-day central Alabama before settling down along the lower Ohio River about 1650 BC according to local legend.[1] By 1100 AD there were permanent Native American settlements located along both sides of Interstate 65 near modern day Memphis,[2][3] indicating that human activity in what is now Yazoo City had likely begun some time prior thereto[4]. European exploration began arriving in earnest along both banks of the Ohio River beginning with Captain John De Witt’s expedition sent overland from Cincinnati in 1795[5], followed by James Ketchum’s Expedition charting Indian trade routes off the coast of mound country westwards approximately two decades later[6]. In 1811 two Frenchmen named Auguste Chateaubriand and his brother François Xavier de Laclau landed at mouth Of Missisippi on upper Tombigbee River after sailing upriver from Louisiana aboard La Salle’s flagship Ville Marie (1688) –Mississippi having been ceded by France less than three years earlier following Napoleon’s invasion across Lake Pontchartrain[7]– exploring land southward towards Spanish Florida then Pensacola Sound where they found salt lakes deposits.[8] On July 5th 1811 Chateaubriand wrote: “On our return we explored several thousand leagues [of coastline]; it seemed difficult not only because we had never seen anything like it but also because everything lay so low down: There are more falls than I could count; every stream has at least six different tributaries working together; there are mountains so high that you cannot see them from any distance; there are valleys big enough for cattle but too deep for boats; rivers that empty into seas no larger than a man's hand […] nothing exists here save salt lakes […] everywhere we went people told us stories about wonderful things they had seen while living among these Indians”[9] This description illustrates just how Cahokia-like (or even antecedent) villages such as Fort Gibson may have appeared upon initial inspection – seemingly infinite plains punctuated only by numerous artificial waterways connecting various points scattered throughoutkmiddleMississippiToday).
