Bellefontaine Neighbors was founded on February 12, 1853 by James Bellefontaine and his wife Nancy Hocking Bellefontaine. James had been born in 1794 in Canada and moved to America when he was just sixteen years old. He worked various jobs until he found himself a farmer near Springfield. In 1837 he sold his farm and bought 3 acres of land east of present-day Bellefontaine village for $600 dollars. He named the area "Bellefontaine" after his wife's family name, which he had inherited from her father. In 1850 James' younger brother John died suddenly while jogging on their property and left an estate consisting of over one hundred slaves including many daughters who would later become members of the Bellefontaines' community. The sisters began negotiating with their master to free their families but they were unsuccessful because they could not find enough money to do so without losing their status as slaves. They finally achieved freedom in 1863 when General William Sherman ordered all slaveholders west of the Mississippi River toimmediately emancipate their slaves or face military action. This event helped start the civil rights movement in America which would soon spread to Missouri by way of integration into the United States Army during World War II through the African American troops known as "The Negro Infantry." After slavery ended in America, many white people from Kentucky started moving into what is now Bellefontaine Village due to its proximity to Springfield and its fertile soil that allowed for large crops such as cotton and corn; these newcomers contributed greatly to development within Bellefontaine Neighbors dating back over 100 years! One example of this growth can be seen with respect to banking which increased along with population density throughout most of 19th century due bothto increased trade opportunities brought about by railroads (a phenomena still extant today) as well as agriculture becoming more important (due largely to generous land grants). What followed during this time period can only be called "industrialization" because it marked an increase not onlyin numbers but also productivity within local businesses such as piano factories that became some of the first in America; clock manufacturers that prospered thanks largely to advances made at Curtis Manufacturing Company; sawmills that turned out logs for housing construction; breweries that brewed beer for local consumption or export before becoming nationally famous like Pabst Brewing Company which relocated here from Cincinnati after prohibition began nationwide in 1933; auto plants producing pickups, SUVs, vans etc.; natural gas wells being drilled throughout town beginning around 1930 etc.; total business activity reaching heights not seen again until recent times thanks primarily(but certainly not exclusively)to online sales channels like Amazon! Many former residents have since passed away or moved away but their memories remain strong with activities such as agricultural festivals and Christmas markets still being held every year throughout December
