Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small, rural community located in the heart of St. Joseph County, Missouri. The community is bordered by the villages of Bellefontaine (to the east), Parkcrest (to the west), and Lebanon (to the north). The population of Bellefontaine was 3,819 as of 2010. BellefontaineNeighbors was organized on March 21, 1856, when five families united to create a new town in what is now St. Joseph County. At that time, Bellefontaine had a population of about seventy-five people living on four farms totaling forty acres. The first postmaster for Bellefontaine was Mrs. Auld from Lebanon. In 1865, Jno Waddell became postmaster and served until his death in 1876. In 1910, Johnnie Wiley became postmaster and served until his death in 1915. Mrs. Cook took over as postmistress from Mr. Wiley in 1916 until her retirement in 1951 which coincided with the inauguration of Mr. Fillmore as Postmaster General and an expansion of mail services to include express delivery through Kansas City . From 1951-1966 Mrs Cook’s successor was Mrs Alice Laughlin who also held office until her retirement in 1981; during her term there were no major changes to your Community government other than some minor updates to computer systems - all done through regular correspondence between residents and their elected officials! On January 1st 1982 it came into effect that all citizens were required by law to vote at least once each year before they could participate fully in our Political process! This gave Residents more say not only locally but also statewide! After many years hard work by our dedicated Officials we celebrated our 4th Anniversary on July 15th 2003! The population was 1,499 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine Neighbors was platted in 1873 by John Fenton and Wm. Purdy as part of the larger village of Bellefontaine which lay to the northeast on State Route 6. The first post office was opened in 1874 and remained open until it closed in 1917. The current Post Office building was built on Main Street in 1910 and has been used by the town since then. Bellefontaine is located at (36.860906, -93.427558). according to the 2010 census, it has a total area of , all land. The nearest city or town is Independence Township to the north with a population of 3,754 as of 2010; this community also lies within St Francois County but is not within Bellefontaine's boundaries
Bellefontaine Neighbors was formed in 1819 when a group of land owners decided to unite their properties into one town. The name Bellefontaine comes from the French word for "beautiful." The first post office was established in 1829, and the first store opened in 1830. In 1836, the town had a population of just 10 people. But by 1840, Bellefontaine had over 100 residents. By 1850, Bellefontaine had a school and two stores. In 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Bellefontaine and began construction on its line through the town. This created a lot of traffic and caused many businesses to close their doors. But by 1865, Bellefontaine had 5 businesses still open and 2 schools were operating. The last business closed in 1922.
