It is part of the Springfield-Grandview-Bellefontaine, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was founded in 1839 by Peter Bellefontaine and his wife Anna Bellefontaine. It was named after Belle Fontaine's homeland of Belgium. The Bellefontaines were Quakers and immigrated to America in 1819. They settled on a farm south of present day Bellefontaine. In 1830, they had six children: Anna (1829-1911), John (1831-1900), Mercy (1833-1910), Fanny (1835-1920), and Peter Jr. (1838-1923). Peter Bellefontaine died in 1853 and his widow married Isaac Gilmore who moved to Bellefontain from Hannibal, Kentucky two years later. Their first child born there was James Gilmore Beaufort born November 8th, 1854. He attended college for one year then became an attorney and started a law firm with his father before moving to Belleville where he served as mayor from 1902 until 1904 when he won reëlection as mayor with 62% of the vote against incumbent Averil Hoggman’s 34%. He continued to serve as Mayor until 1916 when he retired due to ageism in the Democratic Party establishment despite being only 53 years old at the time The townspeople built their first schoolhouse on what is now Main Street in 1841 which serves still today as a community center and library In 1870, General John Frémont came through Belleville during his World War I military service looking for volunteers for the American Expeditionary Force He found many people eager to help but few willing or able to stay long enough for anything more than an acquaintanceship So he organized troops into companies numbered 1st through 9th Kansas Infantry Regiment under Captain George Armstrong Custer . On July 10th 1915 at about 5 Pm., some men from Company 3rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment showed up at our house on Main Street where we were all living with my elderly mother while Father was out getting groceries that afternoon . After telling them we didn't have any food or war supplies they went away without doing anything more than leaving their tents behind us We never heard from them again until 1917 when several members of that company turned up dead near Lookout Mountain Ohio while scouting Tippecanoe Lake National Monument Anyway they got credit for it and everyone always thinks it was them because no one has ever found out who did it Since then most people think its probably somebody within our own community because no evidence has ever been discovered linking any specific person or group theretofore
