Bellefontaine Neighbors, located in Osage County, Missouri, is a small town that was founded in 1839. The community was named after Bellefontaine Academy which was founded in 1827. The Academy educated local children and eventually became an all-girls school. In 1912, the community voted to join the city of St. Louis and Bellefontaine became part of the new city. However, the population of Bellefontaine decreased over time and in 1974 it merged with neighbouring town of Romney to form a single municipality. Today, Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small rural town that has remained largely unchanged since its founding. Bellefontaine Neighbors is located on the left bank of the White River near its confluence with the Osage River. It covers an area of about 1 square kilometres and has a population of around 175 residents as of 2016. The village had a total surface area of just under 2 hectares and consisted mostly of woodlands and pastures until it annexed Romney in 1974. Today, much development has taken place within the boundaries of Belle Fontaine Neighbors including a shopping mall, several schools, as well as a couple dozen homes developments along both banks of the White River. Belle FontaineNeighbors first appears on maps from 1784 when French explorers Francois Clouet and Pierre Le Moyne arrived at what is now Osage County while exploring for fur traders looking for routes into new markets in Great Lakes region during this period known as La Nouvelle France (the New France). Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri was founded in 1836 by John Bellefontaine and his family. The town is named for the Bellefontaine Family of Kentucky who donated land for the town. The first settler in Bellefontaine was Isaac Alder. In 1838, John Bellefontaine organized a township to be formed from what was then part of DeSoto County. This township became known as Bellefontaine Township and remains so today. Bellefontaine Village, Illinois was founded on December 13th, 1888 by two farmers: Edward Kapp and George Hemsley. The name of the village may come from a local stream called "Bellefonte." Kapp had been born in Belgium while Hemsley came to America at age 15 in 1865. After coming to America he started a farm and operated it until 1885 when he sold it to Andrew Wistar who moved into the village and renamed it Bellefontaine. Wistar also built a gristmill which still stands in the village today. The first post office in Bellefontaine Township was established on November 14th, 1830 by Judge James Caldwell with an office located east of present day 2nd Street/Route 9 about one mile north of the center of town square (now known as White Hall). The second post office opened on December 1st, 1836 under the same name but across from what is now Courthouse Square south of 2nd Street/Route 9. It served as both a mail stop and residence for judge Caldwell’s family until 1840 when they relocated to what is now Springfield Heights west of Route 9 where they continued to live until their death some years later).
