Bellefontaine was founded by French Canadians in 1835 and named after Bellefleuri, a small village near Montréal that they had visited while on their way to survey land for a new parish in the area. The first settler there was Pierre-Jacques de laFontaine, who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Other early settlers included Jean Baptiste Côté and François Gagnon; both men arrived in 1836 and cleared land for agriculture around what is now Bellefontaine Lake. In 1839, John Hanks purchased land from Côté and began building one of Springfield's first churches, which he dedicated called Saint-John the Evangelist Church on July 2nd 1840 (the date appears on some stone markers still standing). In 1851, Elisha Beall bought property adjacent to Hanks' church and laid out what would become Bellefontaine Township as well as laying out two other townships: Westville Township (later renamed Belleville) and South Belleville Township (later renamed East Belleville). These municipalities were combined into one municipality in 1903 under name "Bellefontaine Township." Bellefontaine experienced heavy growth during World War II; according to 1940 census data it had an estimated population of 4,500 residents (of whom only 2% were military personnel). After the war ended, many people moved away because of economic hard times but remaining residents kept up housing development until the early 1960s when all but one house in township became vacant or sold off for demolition. By 1970 only about 100 residents remained within Bellefontain Township boundaries with most living outside its borders due to continuing high crime rates coupled with an overall decline in manufacturing jobs throughout central Illinois following deregulation of businesses brought about by President Nixon’s “war room diplomacy” policies during his Watergate presidency In recent years much progress has been made towards revitalization including establishment of a community center/library/cafeteria/golf course complex along with plans to build more homes; however much more remains to be done before Belle Fontaine can truly achieve its potential as an outdoor recreation destination
