It was organized on November 3, 1854 by a group of men from Bellefontaine and Grayslake. Bellefontaine is located at (38.567674, -92.828951). It lies on the right bank of the White River which forms its eastern border. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,711 people residing in the town. Of these, 1,894 were male and 1,812 were female; 7 percent were under the age of 18; and 5 percent were over 60 years old. The racial makeupofthe community was 98% white alone and 0% black or African American. There are no Hispanic or Latino residents in Bellefontaine Neighbors

Bellefontaine Neighbors was a small town in St. Louis, Missouri, United States when it was incorporated on November 1, 1871. The population of the town at its incorporation was 1,500 people. Bellefontaine Neighbor's history began with the founding of the community by John Bellefontaine and his wife Esther on a piece of land that they had purchased from J.B. Hinkle in 1857. The Bellefontaines were pioneers in the early days of St. Louis, moving into their new home in 1859 when they bought property along Third Street between Vine and Harrison Streets from Joice Forbes and her husband John Forbes Jr.. The community continued to grow as families moved into it and businesses were established including a harness shop, grocery store, post office, schoolhouse and more until it reached its current size of about 2,000 residents today. In 1916 (just over 100 years after its incorporation), Bellefontaine Neighbor’s first female mayor was elected when Mrs. Anna Rankin became the first woman to serve as Mayor of St. Louis City Limits following a campaign by her husband Harry Rankin Sr., who served for two terms as Mayor before becoming city recorder in 1931-1932. In 1957 (almost 50 years after Bellefontaine Neighbor’s incorporation), the town voted to switch from Republican to Democratic Party affiliation; this decision helped propel Mayor James Pendergast to victory in an election that year against incumbent State Senator Elijah Buell III.. During World War II (1939-1945), Bellefontaine Neighbors contributed memberships to various organizations such as American Legion #1st Class Headquarters detachment #2 which served aboard USS Augusta during Operation Husky; also contributing $2 per month “for food and gasoline for our shipmates at sea” which totaled $935 total between 1939-1945 according to research done by historian Drs Linda Sieverath & Bruce Crouch compilers of "StLouis Community Civic History: Volume IV" . As part of Post Office Department changes made due to nationwide postal rationing during World War II many small towns around America lost their post offices but managed to keep them open through other means such as offering customers free stamps if they filled out an application form . After the war ended camps were set up all over Missouri for displaced persons including some located near BelleFontaine Neighbors where thousands upon thousands of soldiers and sailors billeted during 1945-1946 . Many homes still stand from those days throughout neighboring towns like Florissant Village which is now known as West Florissant Township within Saint Charles County . It has been reported that nearly every street nameakes street within sight or sound of Bellefontanei Neighbor's old downtown square still bears either one or more descendants thereof even though most have since moved away or passed away; such is life!
