Bellefontaine Neighbors is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The Bellefontaine neighborhood was named for two sisters who were killed in a train accident there in 1871. The Bellefontaine community began as an agricultural village on the north side of the Mississippi River just east of Bellefontaine Cemetery, which served as its center of gravity and remained so until after World War II. In 1871, two sisters – Lula and Nellie Mae Goodin – died when their buggy careened off a track while travelling to visit family in another part of the state. Their families sued both railroads that had built the tracks and won $1 million each against them. This victory opened up many opportunities for young people growing up around Bellefontaine; they could now own land and work it themselves instead of depending on farms run by their parents or other relatives. Today, much property still remains undeveloped around Bellefontaine Cemetery (the Goodins' farmstead is still there), but most residents are now concentrated along either side of I-270 close to downtown St. Louis proper (home to several large retail developments). Some old-timers remember going to see their granddaughters play volleyball or basketball at Belmont Park – located about one mile west of downtown on State Street – during lunchtime or before playing catch with their dogs at nearby Farmington Hills Park (now called Metroball diamond). And even though Interstate 270 has completely taken over most transportation through town since it was built in the early 21st century, some residents still take advantage of streetcar service from downtown to/from Bellefontaine Village during morning rush hour (or walk) these days… among others!
