Gun lights were first used by the Union army during the American Civil War. early on, gunsights were made from small metal objects that could be attached to a soldier's hat or belt. However, when supply issues arose, Confederate forces began using small, hand-held lanterns as gun lights. Eventually, these caps became known as "Lee's Light." The first gas-powered gun lights appeared in 1868. These devices consisted of two brass tubes connected by an infra red tube. The light was controlled by turning a crank and sucking air out of one of the brass tubes. By 1880, these devices had become common enough to be fitted onto rifles and shotguns. As technology improved, more efficient gas-powered gunlights became available. In 1916, General Lee introduced his own version of this device which he called the "Lee's Gun Lamp." After the war, the company reverted back to its original name of Lee's Summit Electric Light Company and continued production of small electric lights into the 1960s.
Lee's Summit is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by James Lee and his wife Nettie to serve as a stop on the overland wagon trail between Springfield and St. Louis. The first Post Office was established in 1837. In 1849, the Lewis & Clark Expedition passed through Lee's Summit while exploring the routes to California. After their return from their journey, they sold some of their goods and cattle to finance a new road between Springfield and Nauvoo, Illinois (now Nauvoo). This road became known as the Santa Fe Trail. In 1865, Lee's Summit became one of eight towns located along that route when it was built as part of bill No., 64th Congress (3rd Session), called "A Bill for creating an immense Highway from Columbus to Cairo." Sponsored by Ulysses S. Grant and signed into law by President Andrew Johnson on July 8, 1865 – less than two months after Lincoln's assassination – this highway soon became known as Route 66 or "The Oregon Trail". Lee's Summit experienced severe deforestation during its early years due to pioneer settlement; however, it now boasts one of the most diverse agricultural landscapes in Missouri due to its location near feeder rivers that provide water for more than 1 million acres of farmland statewide. The town has developed significant businesses including restaurants and retail stores such as Lowe’s Home Improvement Company ( headquarters since 1958) and Target Stores (anchor store since 1987). A large number of Lee's Summit residents work in nearby cities including Springfield or Jefferson City which have become important commuter destinations for many residents with access to Interstate 35W/I-64 southbound travel time within minutes or less from Lee's Summit center
