It was located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and its boundaries were defined by the river's banks. The first permanent settler in Republic was John Smeaton, who arrived in 1838. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Arkansas River. In 1840, he married Susannah Decker and they started to grow crops and raise animals. In 1849, John Smeaton died and his wife took over farming operations. She naming their children after local heroes such as General Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant: James H., George W., Winfield Scott Keyes (1851-1924),and Franklin D.). In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Jackson County, Missouri from Kentucky, Republic became an important strategic location due to its access to transportation resources including water resources and commerce on both sides of the river. On April 12th 1862, during Confederate Invasion of Missouri Raids at Independence Hall & State Capitol Complex near present day Columbia MOJohn Smeaton surrendered his home & wagon train with all his property & slaves to Confederate Captain Jno McGee at Clearwater Landing on the Arkansas River about six miles upstream from present day Republic MO
