St. Charles, Missouri is a small town located in thewestcentral part of the United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of St. Charles County and lies just northeast of Springfield, Missouri on the banks of the Osage River. The first Europeans to visit what is now St.Charles were fur traders from Quebec in 1673-4; they noted “a great plain lying to the eastward about one hundred miles long by fifty wide” and called it New France (present day Illinois). French settlers began arriving in numbers in 1774 and founded a garrison here that year to protect trading interests along the river with Fort de Chartres on Manhattan Island opposite Chicago. In 1803, St.Charles became a territorial division of Kansas Territory when that state was created from parts of Missouri and Iowa Territories; it remained an independent territory until 1861 when it joined Kansas as part of Appomattox CampaignUSA Confederate General Robert E Lee's attempt to unify all southern states into one single nation under his Confederate flag banner. In 1871, following an act by Congress which designated Saint Charles County as "the statistical center for centralMissouri" due to its importance in Commerce, Agriculture and Transportation during this period, St.Charles was named capital city ofMissouri for both fiscal reasons ($10 million relocation fund established) and because Attorney General James Kansan had moved his office here from Jefferson City after becoming frustrated with efforts by then-Governor Nicholas Johnson (D) to move Kansan's main law office fromJefferson City back eastward across I-435 towards downtown Springfield instead of keeping it here within sight but inside easy walking distance of both major urban areas – Topeka and Rolla – while Johnson himself resided primarily in Topeka! In 1909–10 local resident John Fenton started building what would become known as Second Street Hospital which opened its doors on October 1st 1910 after years of fundraising with support from locals such as Ladies Aid Club president Lizzie English who gave $5 for each bed used at other hospitals during World War I; this also marked St.Charles' first claim as host city or metropolitan area for any international event or exposition taking place within our borders! In 1922–23 construction began on Saint Louis University's new Academic Center adjacent to present day First Street Baptist Church whichopened its doors August 15th 1923 after more than two yearsof fundraising led by Bishop Wm Hynes (R) & Drs J[ohn] Pemberton (& Mrs Pemberton), General Manager J[ohn] M[acdonald], Vice President C[harles A]. Briggs & Treasurer Geo W.] Cooke; this alsomarkedthatSaintCharleshadbecomethesecondlargestcityinMissouriafterSpringfield! On July 1st 1959 Saint Charles received municipal water systemsfrom nearby Rolla Municipal Water District resulting in increased vehicular traffic coming through town limits adding an extra 2 mphphonetically speakingduring rush hours! This situationcontinueduntilJanuary1st1974whenRollastoprovidingwatertoStCatherineftothedrinkers!!! Consequently,duringthatyearestimatesplaceencountyvegetationconsistingofapproximations 70%timber&30%soilwhilefloodingoccurredonlyonce!! In 1840, the town became a part of the new Missouri Territory when it was split off from Kansas Territory. In 1846, St. Charles became an independent city and remained so until its incorporation into the City of Saint Charles on January 1, 1901.* The history of St. Charles is full of innovation and progressiveness; it has been a center for education and commerce for more than 200 years. The town has seen many changes over that time: It went through several hundred years of growth before becoming an incorporated city; during its long period as an unincorporated community, it experienced a number of fires which destroyed much property but also left significant evidence about local life and culture behind; today’s downtown area is one product of that process – centuries-old buildings still stand today despite some recent damage caused by vandals or weather conditions; anddespite some challenges posed by current physical or demographic conditions (euphemistically referred to as “the aging process”), overallresidential housing prices have stayed relatively stable since 2000*(*See Appendix). Today*, (*See Appendix), St.Charles remains an important cultural center for the surrounding region with strong ties to Catholic religion and social services*. (*See Appendix) Its rich history provides a unique opportunity to learn about what makes this small community special*(*See Appendix). This paper will explore aspects related to both its commercial development during early American times as well as later eras when it transitioned from unincorporated community status to incorporated city status*. The first European settlers in St. Charles County were Huguenots who arrived in 1681. They built a small cabin on the banks of the Missouri River and named their settlement after Saint-Charles, a French bishop who had died in 1673. The area that is now St. Charles was part of present-day Union County before it became St.Charles County, Missouri, on March 14, 1836. On July 1, 1839, the county was organized from part of Union County and named for General James K. Polk, then President of the United States.
