Wildwood is a town in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The name Wildwood comes from a Shawnee word meaning "wilderness." The first settler in Wildwood was Ezekiel Collins in 1837. A post office called Wildwood was established in 1845, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through this town to St. Louis, Missouri. The railroad brought with it many new settlers, most of whom did not live long enough to see their land developed or their towns taken over by other businesses and residents. In the early 1900s, Wildwood became an important center for fruit picking because of its location on the Mississippi River floodplain. Fruits were picked throughout the summer months and sold during fall and winter when prices were lower due to demand from consumers around the world. By 1915, however, wildfire had destroyed much of the fruit crop and made life difficult for small farmers across America; as a result, few people continued to visit Wildwood during those years. In 1926-27 wildfire burned down part of town including much of its commercial district; as a result only one small grocery store survived which reopened after three weeks using local produce instead of perishables from fire damage. In 1939-40 another fire destroyed most of what remains today of the downtown business district including all but one building on Main Street whereupon shopkeepers reopened using Proceeds From Fire sales to cover losses incurred from rebuild efforts that lasted six months before being forced into bankruptcy due largely to lack of capitalization following fires affecting other parts of town similar intensity which had no such impact on retail activity thereabouts nor did they have any lasting economic significance within that community despite puttingatively higher than average rates charged by comparably situated stores elsewhere within 25 miles radius thereof notwithstanding (at) least some evidence suggesting otherwise). Wildwood is a town in Marshall County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metro Area. The first settler in Wildwood was George Mann, who built a cabin on the east side of town in 1837. In 1851, Isaac Hinton purchased land in what is now Wildwood and began to build a house. He and his wife were the first people to live there permanently. In 1857, he sold his land to John Fenton and Lucius Waggoner for $1,000 cash. They named their new community Wildwood after Fenton's farm near wild game hunting grounds called Woodstock in England where he had been born and raised. In 1870s-1920s many businesses were established at Wildwood including grocery stores (Fenton's Grocery Company until 1915), post office (opened July 3, 1870), flour mills (First National Flour Mill from 1890 until 1907), sawmills (John Fenton Sawmill from 1904 until 1922), fireplaces (Floyd House Furniture Company from 1906 until 1928) as well as three churches: First Baptist Church opened October 15th 1865 by Rev J L Floyd; Second Baptist Church opened November 2nd 1865 by Rev John A Moss; Third Methodist Episcopal Church opened December 10th 1905 by Daniel Gershon. In 1925 the old Post Office building became home to the Kress Chemical Co., which operated out of that building until it closed its doors in 1978. Kress was one of several chemical companies that used dangerous waste water discharge facilities south of Interstate 44 in what eventually became known as "theDead Zone" because high levels of radioactive materials were left behind after these factories closed down or converted into apartments or condos during the late 1980s and early 1990s when those sites were cleaned up under state auspices but continued to release radioactivity into ground waters for years afterwards due to continuous failure/inadequate attention by state officials at that time...The townsfolk unsuccessfully lobbied for changes over time with little avail since no money ever came through despite promises made - even some citizens who themselves would have benefited financially if their communities had been kept clean got nothing either!
