It was also close to some other important settlements such as Hannibal and Westport where travelers could rest before continuing their journey northward or southward on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1840, after building his own cabin at "Aurora,"General LafayetteWildWOOD opened up trade with local Indians including selling them buffalo robes and items made from hide and feathers for use as clothing among other things In 1865 during Civil War times Aurora served as Union Station until supply problems led to its abandonment following Confederate occupation This left Aurora open to raiding by Confederate forces which resulted in numerous losses for both sides For many years after Reconstruction Aurora functioned intermittently as either a depot or storehouse until finally being abandoned again in 1928 due largely to lack of maintenance . However over time various groups have tried various reopening attempts but all have failed During World War II Aurora briefly served as Headquarters for United States Military Forces stationed in southern Missouri prior to being moved eastward nearer Lexington . When that unit withdrew from Arkansas early 1945 however command center functions remained at Arlington until May 1946 when Commanding General Lucius Noyes ordered all military units within Kansasactivated . Following this move all military activities within Unit 462baugh Area returned home from May 1946 onward .
