Billings, Montana is a small town in the Western United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. Billings is located in southeastern Montana on the Missouri River. The town was founded by J.D. Billings in 1869 as a stop on his route between Great Falls and Helena. In 1902, it became an incorporated city. The first post office in Billings was established on October 5, 1868, by George Armstrong Custer and John Della Whitehurst. The name of the town originated from J.D.'s mining claim that had been named for him: "Billings Station." On November 25, 1870, J.D.'s brother-in-law Wm Hargrave opened a store at what is now Main Street and 3rd Avenue in downtown Billings; this became the first general store in what would become Montana Territory (later North Dakota). In 1871, Arapaho Indians attacked white settlers near present day Hastings and several people were killed including James Moulton Storey and Elijah Rice; this event is considered to be the beginning of the Indian Wars in western Montana Territory. In 1875–76 two groups of Sioux Indians destroyed most of Fort Laramie but did not attack or kill any whites; these events are considered to be part of Native American history associated with Billings area In 1865, when Yellowstone National Park was created following US President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation designating certain pockets of Wyoming as national land forntilers and their descendants only if they could agree to leave their lands undisturbed (the so-called Four Forks Agreement), parts of present day Montanan Territory were included within boundaries delineated by Lincoln as part of that land grant On July 20th 1861 Unitarian minister Reverend Drury Washburn set up shop at what is now Fourth Avenue & South Washington Streets in downtown Bozeman; this became the first Presbyterian church west of Denver In 1865 General Grant ordered all troops eastward across Kansas border into Nebraska instead of moving through Iowa like he had planned; this order caused much tension among easterners who felt they were being forced into a military engagement against their will On May 12th 1865 three men HF Sibley EF Sheppard robbed two stagecoaches northbound on US Highway 16 nearpresent day Telluride Pass while traveling from Bozeman to Missoula; these crimes are generally seen as opening up trade routes along that stretch which saw many robberies during those days In 1867 Territorial Governor Thomas Walsh announced plans for construction along US Highway 93 from Bozeman to Great Falls indicating that there would be no further expansion into present dayMontana Territory without special approval from Washington This decision led to numerous protests by ranchers who believed their property rights had been violated federal government interventionism
