The village was founded in 1901 by silver miners who were looking for a new home after their old mining camp in Carbonated Creek failed to pan out. The community began as a cluster of shacks and cottages on the south side of the valley near where railroad tracks crossed the Butte River. With production reaching 3 million ounces per year by 1982, CRC purchased buttes adjoining Silver Bow Mines land for $1 million cash considerations; this purchase increased production by about 60%. In 1986, CRC merged with Phelps Dodge Corporation (PhelpsDodge) creating what would become Mercury Mining Corp.(mercurial). With mercury production reaching 2 million ounces per year by 1998-2000 CRRC sold its interest in Mercury Mining Corp.}to Rio Tinto Alcan Limited for $5 billion cash considerations} forming Rio Tinto Alcan Limited Copper Refining And Marketing Company PLC (Rio Alcan plc.) which continues operations today as world's largest copper producer.}With an annual output approaching 6 million ounces(24 tonnes) CBD has been created through amalgamation among five separate businesses:silver bow smelters(butterfly),copper refinery(silver bonnet),refinery(iridium),and marketing company{the "bundle"}. At present there are six mining companies operating within Butte County including two gold-mining outfits!

Their cattle ranch is now one of the largest in Montana. The Buttes are also major landowners in both Grant County and Dearborn County. They have a long history of supporting local governments, including serving as directors for both River View School District No. 1 and Grantsville School District No., from 1951 to present day. The buttes are a beautiful sight, with many peaks reaching 6,000 feet or more—perfect for viewing “the big sky” during winter months when snow cover is abundant (usually several inches deep). copper-bearing gneiss can be seen throughout much of the range; Apollo Peak has over 2 million pounds (900 kilograms) of copper reserves according to recent estimates
Butte Silver Bow is a town in Butte County, Montana, United States. It was post officeed on July 1, 1912. The first settler in Butte County was John Neely who arrived in 1868. The town was platted on October 25, 1912 and named for silver being found at the same location.
