Butte Silver Bow is a small town located in Butte County, Montana. It was founded in 1875 by Mormons and it has been the seat of government for Butte County since 1907. The population of Butte Silver Bow was 10,000 in 1910 and it has shrunk to 3,500 today. The town's first settler was George Wittell, who came to the area in 1875. He built a cabin on the side of a mountain and named his property "Butte Summit." Wittell's cabin still stands today and it is open to visitors. In 1907, ButteSilverBow voters elected Harry Fenton as their first local official. Fenton served until he resigned due to health problems in 1916. He was succeeded by John Ahern with the following year's election. Ahern served as mayor from 1919-1922 and 1924-1929; he also served as county treasurer from 1925-1927 and 1929-1933. Ahern was succeeded by Willard Jorgenson in 1933 and Jorgenson served until his death in 1945. Jorgenson's successor, Royce Ladd, served until 1951 when he resigned due to illness; Ladd was replaced by Earle Crouse with the 1951 election results becoming effective that year. Crouse had been serving as city administrator for Butte City since its incorporation on November 1, 1949; he became acting mayor upon Mayor Royce Ladd's resignation effective December 2, 1951due to ill health (Ladd had died two weeks earlier). After serving one term as acting mayor, Earle Crouse became Mayor on January 1, 1953 when Mayor Royce Ladd vacated office because of an organic heart ailment which would require surgery within two months if not treated successfully. He held the position until his death on December 8th 1954 after having suffered a heart attack less than one week before his inauguration ceremony at Central High School where he had been speaker during breakfast hour preceding classes began at 7:00am each day during his tenure

Butte Silver Bow was founded by silver entrepreneurs in 1875 as a small mining and smelting town on the edge of what is now Butte County. By 1900, Butte Silver Bow had become one of the most important silver towns in America. The first silver mine at Butte Silver Bow was opened in 1875 by John A. Sweeny and James Laughlin, two entrepreneurs from Leadville, Colorado who were looking for a new source of silver to extract from nearby hillsides. The mine went out of business within a few years, but miners continued to find valuablesilver ore until 1902 when a new mine opened up next door called Park Hill Mine. Park Hill Mine produced an estimated 5 million pounds (2 tonnes) of gold each year from 1880-1902 before it closed down due to over-grazing by cattle and other animals. In 1907, Springdale Mines merged with other companies to form Associated Mines Corporation which began producing lead and zinc minerals along with silver at its Park Hill Mine site. In 1912 Associated Mines Corporation became part of the Union Mining Company which enlarged its operations including opening two more mines at ButteSilverBow: White Pine Mine (now known as Cache Peak Goldmine) and First Mesa Mine (now known as Empire Goldmine). With these additions to its resources, soon Associated Mines Corporation became one of America's leading copper producers too! In 1929 Associated Mines Corporation merged with Republic Mining Company which increased production capacities still further! TodayAssociatedMinesCorp operates three mines located in eastern Montana - Forest Creek Open Pit Copper mine (owned by Rio Tinto), Golden Spike Openpit Copper mine (owned by Agnew Exploration Partners) and Cache Peak Goldmine (owned by American Eagle Minerals).
