Great Falls is a small town in Montana, located about an hour's drive east of the state capital, Helena. The population as of 2013 was 2,543. It is the county seat of Gallatin County and home to Great Falls High School and Great Falls Community College. The first inhabitants in Great Falls were the Hidatsa people who arrived in what is now Great Falls around AD 1805. They built a teepee village on the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. The Hidatsa were later displaced by other Native American groups and their villages were abandoned until 1795, when fur traders discovered oilfields near present-day Great Falls. A company founded by Pierre Dorion purchased land at the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in 1798 for $10,000. By 1800, crude oil had been discovered at nearby Smith Peak and early investors began exploration to find more reserves. In 1807, General James Wilkinson established Fort George Wright at what is now Park City on Big Horn Creek to protect against French Canadians who attempted to invade America via Canada during the War of 1812. In 1827, Territorial Governor John McLaughlin appointed George Armstrong Custer as agent for Indian Affairs in Great Falls after his successful campaigns against Santa Fe Indians near present-day White Sands National Monument northwest of Great Falls In 1830–1831 he also led an expedition against Plains Indians northward from Fort Laramie along Buffalo Hills into Wyoming Territory (later Colorado). This campaign was part of Custer's attempt to open up western Montana Territory for white settlement which he believed would lead to stability within North America and reduce hostilities between different Indian tribes
