Great Falls, Montana is a city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Gallatin County. The population was 17,651 at the 2010 census. The Great Falls area has been inhabited for more than 3,000 years and is known for its mineral resources including copper, silver, gold and uranium. It became an important railway town in the late 19th century before becoming a major center for lumbering and manufacturing during the 20th century. In 1872, prospectors discovered valuable deposits of ore in what would become Great Falls. The first mill on the site was built in 1875 by John Sieving and others as a small stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad. By 1907, over 100 mills had been built along the river between Great Falls and Pierre City; this made Great Falls one of America's leading industrial cities during its early decades. In addition to its role as an industrial center, Great Falls also served as a transportation hub with local trains running to nearby mining towns such as Nelson and Whitefish Bay while goods were transported by wagon or steamboats upriver to Pierre City or Helena. The city's growth slowed after World War II when many industries closed down or moved out of reach due to competition from other cities in post-war America. However, since 2000s there has been an increase in development around downtown great falls with new restaurants, bars/pubs, office buildings and homes being constructed on formerindustrial sites throughout town.. The first handguns were made in 1861 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and George Washington Stephens. The pistols were designed as a weapon for the Confederate army, but became popular with American Civil War soldiers. In 1865, John Browning invented the hunting rifle, which led to the Gunsmoke revolver.
In 1875, the first post office in Great Falls was established. By 1900, the city had a population of over 100 residents. The Great Falls Manufacturing Company was founded in 1903 and became one of the largest employers in Great Falls. In 1916, the United States Congress passed the Consolidated Act which designated Great Falls as a military installation for training American troops during World War I. The City Council first voted to annex the town of Helena on November 9, 1916 and then on January 2, 1917 by an 8-2 vote annexed Great Falls. On July 1, 1919, after years of talks and advocacy by community activists and business owners, the City Council approved annexation of Park Rapids which at that time had a population of just under 300 people. On October 12th 1920, following approval from both chambers of the Montana Legislature,,Great Falls became an incorporated city with its own government and laws. The original water tower still stands today as a reminder of how quickly Great Falls grew during its early years. Today, greatfalls is home to more than 30 businesses including banks (four large national ones), health care providers (including four Kaiser Permanente clinics), restaurants (eleven major chains/chains with over 1 million sq ft floor space), retail stores (over 50 small businesses) and two colleges/universities: Northern Montana University-based Montana State University & Western Michigan University-based Wayne State College
Great Falls was founded in 1868 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a trading post on the Missouri River. The town grew rapidly, but it remained mainly a rural community until the early 20th century. Great Falls became an important center for transportation and commerce after the construction of the railroad through the area in the late 19th century. In 1907, Great Falls became one of two cities in Montana (the other being Bozeman) when the statehood of that state resulted from passage of Constitutional amendment No. 1.
