In 1867-68 local businessmen formed a group called "The boosters" which purchased an interest in Great Falls Railway Company (GFR) which built a line east from Belle Fourche Junction into Great Falls City Limits in 1868-69. This new development lead to increased traffic on GFR's main line making it one of Great Falls' most important economic engines during its early years despite competition by other nearby cities such as Butte or Helena

The economy has been slowly declining since 2000 but there are some efforts being made to revive it including plans to make more use of renewable resources such as solar power and wind turbines; develop new parks near town; and build a new library/community center which would include a gymnasium/water park/field house combination
