Kalispell is home to two ammunition manufactures, Winchester and Remington. Both companies are based in nearby Peoria, Illinois. Ammunition production in Kalispell started in 1892 and ended in 1957. The first Winchester ammunition was produced at the old Pritchard & Sons plant on Main Street. The Remington factory opened its doors to production in 1896 and produced shells for both rifles and pistols until it closed its doors in 1957. While Winchester has continued to produce ammunition throughout much of its history, Remington has been most renowned for their shot shells (the company's traditional product). Today, Remington produces a variety of rounds including rifle bullets as well as handgun rounds.

It is also home to the University of Montana at Kalispell and the Kalispell Regional Airport. The first people to live in what is now Kalispell were Indians who hunted and gathered game near the mouth of the Athabasca River. They built their homes on top of small hills around 10,000 BP. In 1855, settlers from Illinois came through what is now Yellowstone National Park and found land for sale in present-day Kalispell. The first settlers arrived in May 1857 and platted out a townsite on high ground just east of downtown today's Civic Center Drive. The name "Kalispel" means "place where two rivers join." The town was founded as a stagecoach stop on the North Platte Trail between Great Falls and Helena during July 1858 by Captured Arapaho Chief John Whitehurst with his band led by Chief Black Mesa. This event marks one of America's earliest white settlements west of the Mississippi River - an area that would become known as Indian Territory under Ulysses S Grant’s administration (1863-1868). In 1862, General Doniphan decided to move Fort Belknap northwestward along US 87 instead of southward towards Great Falls due to concerns about what would happen if Russia should gain control over Alaska or any other portion of this new nation after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1860). As a result, much attention was paid to Fort Belknap when it was abandoned on October 16th 1865 due to lack thereof food supplies after Mexican forces entered Colorado via Bighorn Pass during the Dakota Wars (1864-1867). A large building associated with early days of Kalispel development still stands today - called Old Dutch Hall or First Presbyterian Church - off Main Street Northeast in central city Plaza! It served as Post Office until 1907 when it became locally owned and operated by residents until 1979 when it closed again due to poor economy/market conditions/insufficient funding for renovation/maintenance without federal stimulus money available then & still unavailable now!
