Missoula is located in the heart of the Great Plains, and its history dates back to the days when it was a thriving mining town. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans, who named it "Moccasin Mound" because of the abundance of moccasins (boots) in the area. In 1865, Missoula became a part of Montana Territory and soon began to prosper as a center for agricultural production. Mining continued to be an important sector ofMissoula's economy until about 1890, when railroads came to Missoula and other communities in Western Montana. This shift from agriculture to industry caused considerable job loss for people in Missoula and other towns along the railroad corridor. The first gun factory in Missoula was established by J.H. Cramer in 1892. At that time, guns were still made primarily with hand-guns or pistols. The company produced firearms including shotguns, rifles, revolvers, handguns and machineguns until 1916. During World War I, Mr. Cramer produced munitions for the war effort including shells and torpedoes. He also operated a meatpacking business which supplied local grocery stores with fresh meat beginning in 1916. After World War I ended, Mr. Cramer sold his business and retired from business life around 1925). In 1926/27 he founded what is now known as North American Arms Company Incorporated (NAAI), which became one of America's leading firearms manufacturers during its early years (1926-38). NAAI produced pistols alone as well as rifles and shotguns; however due to financial difficulties during these years it ceased operations completely in 1938) . During World War II NAAI resumed production under license from Colt Firearms Corporation (CFL) of Connecticut; however this company ceased operations after just six months because of wartime restrictions placed on United States arms exports by Roosevelt's New Deal Administration . In 1943 Mr Cramer reopened NAAI under new ownership which had been formed out of assets leftover from CFL; thus continuing production into 1945 though some guns were already producible before that date . From 1946 through 1968 North American Arms Co., Incorporated manufactured automatic weapons such as Thompson Submachine Guns (TMG), Browning Hi-Power Pistols (.45 ACP), Colts Automatics Pistol chambered for 9mm Parabellum roundsunder license from Colt General Armory Corporation ; finally purchased outright by Glock Test & Evaluation Corporation effective 1 January 1998 Today North American Arms remains engaged in manufacturing high quality automatic firearms products under contract with various law enforcement agencies throughout North America
