In 1887, Jens Jensen acquired land adjacent to what is now downtown Missoula for $15 per acre (the price had been raised after an earlier failed attempt by John Day). Jensen named his ranch "Missoula". He began construction on what would become one of America's largest irrigation systems; today'sMissoula Irrigation District was formed from portions of his ranch that became part of Yellowstone National Park. Mr. Jensen also donated land for use as municipal parkland which still includes much of downtown today – including First Baptist Church (founded 1912), Masonic Temple (1898), and Cascade Mall (opened 1978). Missoula experienced its greatest diversity when non-native people began arriving during World War II: many individuals arrived as refugees or displaced persons; some businesses opened their doors to accommodate these new arrivals while others closed shop or lost customers because they could not compete with wartime production quotas set by government authorities.(Erickson v Wolk)

Central College quickly becameMissoulanians' top choice for collegiate education and by 1890 had graduated more than 20 percent of all Montanan graduates. During World War I, Missoula played an important role in providing food for American troops stationed abroad. The local flour milling industry boomed during wartime; production reached 1 million pounds per week by 1918.
