Missoula, Montana is a small town in the U.S. state of Montana that was founded in 1865 by James W. McGill and his family. The town is located on the Missoula River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Great Falls and 30 miles (48 km) south of Kalispell. It became an important commercial center for the region during the late 19th century and early 20th century, ranking first in population growth rate among American towns between 1892 and 1920. Missoula was originally named Park City after its founder, James W.
