The population was 12,884 as of the 2010 census. Bellevue is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs- Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellevue is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is the smallest community in Nebraska and the most rural. It is bordered by Kearney to the south and east, Hastings to the north, and Painters ford to the west. The Bellevue post office opened on November 10, 1892. The name of the town was changed from Anamosa to Bellevue on January 1, 1907. The post office closed on October 15, 1959. Bellevue was named after General John A. Fremont's cavalry brigade which fought at Stockbridge Heights during the American Civil War. General Fremont had originally come to Nebraska in 1869 as part of an army led by Ulysses S Grant andpopulated what is now BellevUE because he thought it would be a good place for his troops to winter before returning home. The first settler in BellevUE was Elijah Fenton who arrived in 1871 along with his family from Illinois They built a crude cabin near present-day Douglas Road and started farming there until 1880 when they moved southwestward into present-day Kearney where they began plowing land that became their main crop until 1915 when they moved back into their original farm location about two miles northeast of their current site where they continue today as farmers grazed their herds of cattle and sheep until 1924 when they decided to expand their operations into housing by purchasing some of farmland east of Douglas Road which became known as "Homesite Landing". In 1957 residents voted 3-1 against annexation by Kearney so that BellevUE would remain independent but eventually became one of many towns annexed by Kearney during its growth spurt following World War II due primarily to military needs such as barracks for soldiers barracks for sailors warships plants needed for war production transportation infrastructure necessary for commerce building schools buses factories parks recreation areas roads etc...remainingresidential bastions of opposition against annexation often coming together with moral arguments (ie land values were too high) while city boosters touted new shopping malls jobs promised through government investment industrial parks etc...becoming just another suburbalbeit one with more taxes
