In La Vista, Nebraska, the town’s history can be traced back to the early 1800s when it was established as a trading post on the east bank of the Platte River. In 1836, La Vista became a site for the first in what would become an annual tradition of gun shows andaffles that took place in honor of General Andrew Jackson. The events continued until 1912 when La Vista was renamed Omaha and its gun shows were discontinued. However, there are references to firearms being seen in La Vista from as early as 1868. That year, Horace Greeley published an article in his paper “The New York Tribune” entitled “An Account of Some Gun Shows Held at La Veta this Year.” The article included images of firearms and killed animals along with other objects found at gun shows around America during that time period. It is likely that these guns were used by local residents for ceremonial purposes or demonstrations. In 1916, Johnnie Cochran won his first professional race with a bicycle while serving out time in prison for a misdemeanor assault conviction. This event served as inspiration for the song “Johnnie Cochran Runs For President (1916)” written by Jesse James and Jack London and made popular by Roosevelt becoming president that year. However, much later in life Cochran retracted his endorsement of Roosevelt’s candidacy stating he did not believe he had been fairly treated during his incarceration. During World War II, many foods and products produced in Nebraska were needed for war efforts such as gasoline, rubber Missouri corn Planters hats (which helped keep soldiers cool), uniforms and more importantly ammunition which kept people fed and clothed throughout the conflict. When production ceased after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 most all weapons stores closed including those located within miles of Omaha City limits where citizens could buy their munitions from store employees under authority granted by Mayor William Dennison Jr.. Just two weeks later however local resident Harry Elmer Hanson began stocking up on munitions at his home following reports Japanese aircraft were bombing large areas near Omaha City . This event would eventually lead to Elmer Hanson becoming known as “The Mayor Of Omaha With A Pistol” due to his efforts to ensure that food supplies didn't fall into enemy hands should they enter city limits airspace
