Elko is a town in Storey County, Nevada, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after Roy A. Elko, who served as mayor from 1951 to 1955 and as county commissioner from 1959 to 1961. The first store in Elko opened in 1903. In 1924, developer Darnell Waddell built the first shopping center in Elko and it remains one of its most important businesses today. In 1940, World War II veteran Harry Elam purchased 160 acres (65 hectares) of land east of town for $10 per acre ($ million today). This site became known as "Elam's Valley". After the war ended and Elam could no longer use his land for farming or other purposes, he sold it to the city of Reno for $15 per acre ($ million today). In 1951, Mayor Roy A. Elko bought 100 acres (40 hectares), east of town near Highway 395/Las Vegas Boulevard for $5 per acre ($ million today). On October 12, 1957 an estimated 100 lb (45 kg) bomb destroyed a post office building and two homes on Main Street in downtown Elko just before 10 p.m., leaving six people dead and fourteen injured including five children who were inside the post office when it exploded; this attack was also the deadliest terrorist act against civilians in American history until September 11th 2001adventurer Richard Reid detonated a device hidden inside America Airlines Flight 93 over Pennsylvania that killed all fifty-six passengers and crew

From 1957 through 1971 minor discoveries secretary Don Armstrong reported finding additional worthwhile silver prospects on adjacent hills south of intersections with Streets 1 & 2…."Although no significant new silver veins were located during these years″ Armstrong believed there still remained potential for significant silver production should exploration be conducted “in an effortless manner”2″ although no such exploration ever took place
