Sparks was founded in 1859 as a landing for stagecoaches on the trade route between Sacramento and Yuba City. The first Post Office was established in 1865. In 1870, sparks became an incorporated village under the name of Carson City. A fire destroyed most of Carson City on October 10, 1886; however, Sparks remained undamaged and continued to serve as its local government until it merged with Reno on January 1, 1907. The Main Street Historic District contains significant architecture from both before and after American settlement in Nevada. It runs from downtown to the rebuilt town hall building which replaced an old schoolhouse that burned down in 1903. Other buildings include two churches (First Presbyterian and Episcopal), two hotels (the Hotel Reno and the Hotel California), a bank (The First National Bank of Sparks), three stores (the Gresham Store Company store opened by Wm Henson Gresham in 1877-78, the Peoples store opened by Jno Meeks early 1900s and finally Belknap Hardware store built around 1915-16), four schools (one erected posthumously; three were built during segregation: Henderson Elementary Schoolopened1912; Nogales High Schoolopened 1935; Desert Academy opened 1951) and one garage/repair shop(1886). On April 15th 1861 Josephine Bonney bestowed her title "Missouri" upon her new home at what is now corner of Washington Avenue North & Spanish Fork Road East near present day Englewood Drive South due north of Ft Washoe Creek

Sparks was founded in 1875 by Captain George A. Richards and his wife Anna McCurdy Richardson as an agricultural settlement named Eldorado. It became an incorporated village on February 15, 1912. On April Fool's Day 1913, Sparks had its first post office opened with three clerks serving a population of about 100 people. In 1915, Sparks incorporation was revoked because of lack of support from the government and it reverted to being an agricultural settlement again until it became a city on October 1st, 1931 when it passed a referendum to become one. On January 14th, 1951 President Harry S Truman announced that he would be making Sparks the site for the new Test Site for America's First Atomic Bomb Project which became known as Los Alamos National Laboratory. The city passed a referendum to incorporate into Los Alamos on May 9th and was granted city status on June 6th becoming home to over 50 employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory who labored in various parts of the facility until 1957 when it moved to New Mexico due to budget cuts within the Lab. The City Hall building has been occupied by many different businesses over time including Northrop Grumman Corporation before being sold and used as apartments in 2001 before being returned back to use as City Hall once again in 2003 after renovations were completed
