Concord, New Hampshire is a small town located in Hillsborough County, NH. The population was 7,549 at the 2010 census. Concord is the county seat of Hillsborough County and home to the University of New Hampshire. It lies on scenic Route 9 northwest of Granite Falls, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Manchester and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Boston. The townsite was first settled in 1735 by a group of English settlers led by Colonel John Trumbull. The land that Concord sits on was granted to them in what is now Hillsborough County by King George III in 1758. By 1800, Concord had a population of 1,000 people and was known as "the little city". In 1803, Boston businessman Nicholas Waterman donated land to be used as a college town site for the new Hinsdale College. Waterman's gift became official when the state legislature passed an act naming the college after him on March 12, 1804. In 1865–66, local farmer Elijah Howe donated more than 3 acres (1 ha) to be used as a public square near where Post Office Square now stands. The first university students arrived in Concord in 1837 with curriculum from Harvard and Yale universities; however, only one student body graduated from Hinsdale College before it merged with UNH in 1916 to form what is now known as UNC-Chapel Hill. From 1941 until its closure following World War II due to wartime enrollment restrictions, Hinsdale College functioned as both an undergraduate school and military academy jointly under the name "New England Military Institute." In 1967–68 during campaigning for governor by Republican Ovide Mazzoli against incumbent Democrat Robert Flanders, then-Concord Mayor John Vassar distributed campaign literature errors spelling "Aquinas" as "Aquinas", leading some residents to call him Aquinas IV instead of Vassar IV during his victory campaign that year. It is the county seat of Hillsborough County and home to the University of New Hampshire (UNH). Concord's history date back to 1765 when it was part of Manchester. In 1837, the town voted to become a separate incorporated village. The first post office opened in Concord on October 16, 1837. In 1916, Concord became an unincorporated village again. Its current name comes from its proximity to Harvard University; as one of only three towns in NH whichHarvard has maintains a student body and faculty, "concord" was chosen as the name for the community by both students and Harvards themselves. In 1765, when Manchester became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony after British acquisition of that territory from Dutch colonists during their war for independence (see History of New Hampshire), many residents chose to move away from English rule and join forces with other patriots fighting for independence against Great Britain. One group decided to settle in what is now Concord because it offered fine soils and easy access to water resources unavailable in larger settlements such as Portsmouth or Boston. The new arrivals founded a small village called Sandwich on November 15th following meeting at an old mill pond near present-day Middle Road and South Avenue. On December 12th they elected John Adams President of their new society called "The First Parish Church Society". The first pastor was Rev James Pemberton who served until 1800 when he retired due to age restrictions placed upon Congregational ministers by royal governor Jonathan Belcher III . Reverend Drury came next but died suddenly before his services could begin on January 7th 1800 leaving four professorial vacancies that were filled by Samuel Alden (January 9th 1800 – February 2nd 1800), Ebenezer Cooke (February 4th 1800 – May 3rd 1801), Nathaniel Hawthorne (May 5th 1801 – July 10th 1802) ). After Reverend Drury's death there were six vacancies left until Reverend Amos Kendall took over on April 20th 1800 . Kendall had been ordained deacon Septembers 22nd 1799 at St Paul’s Chapel where he served through December 8eenth 1700 with distinction under Revd Samuel Eliot while serving as pastor at Salem’s Second Congregational Church spelt Wentworth House . He then moved up into membership status being ordained an elder March 6 “Apostle John”1800 at Charlestown Meetinghouse also spelt Wentworth House He helped found Nashua congregation Octavian Baptist church Februarie 27 1798 followed by Orchard June 251801 having been ordained Elder Joseph Parsons Aprill 101797 At this point Kendall resigned effective June 25 2001 becoming Pastor Emeritus Of All Hallows Episcopal Church North Andover MA despite still living inNH
