Keene is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,327 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hillsborough County and the largest city in Hillsborough County by area. The towns of Keene, Goffstown, Nashua and Castle Rock are also part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1788 as part of the attempt to form a new state out of what were then British colonies in North America. The town's first settler was Captain John Keene from England who arrived on July 1, 1788. At its peak, Keene had about 25 houses and 100 people. In 1801, when New Hampshire became a state, Keene became part of Hillsborough County and it has since remained its primary economic center. In 1909, local citizens voted to rename their city to Manchester because it felt that Manchester's reputation as an "important manufacturing center" had been harmed by Keene's status as the county seat. The name change came about due to some confusion over which city should be given first place for music festivals held at two different venues in downtown Manchester each year (Keene Coliseum and First Congregational Church). In 1931, after years of discussion between Mayor Abramson and other leaders in townspeople decided that they wanted their own municipal government separate from that of Hillsborough County so that they could better serve their residents; this referendum passed with majorities supporting both options with only 3 percent against it among all registered voters within the town limits The current mayor is Dan Buono who was elected on November 6th 2014
