The town became an incorporated community in 1851 and has expanded to include the towns of Goffstown, Keene, Manchester, Nashua and Westfield since then. John Keene came from Devon, England with his wife Sarah and their two children in 1764. In 1768 he patented a tract of land containing 11 miles (18 km) square near present-day Goffstown. He also founded Manchester about two years later and had a store there by 1770. Many Englishmen decided to settle down after exploring new areas around Cape Cod – including Rhode Island – due to promises made by King George II to those who ventured forth into what he called “the Indies” (now Central America). Individuals who traveled eastward reported seeing vast tracts of land that were easily accessible by sea but lacked any kind of human settlement or infrastructure; this included much of what is now New England and Maine. They managed to purchase some supplies before making their way back upstream towards Portsmouth Royal Dockyard where they embarked upon another long journey home via Albany…all without ever having seen or tasted fresh water!

During World War I (1914-18), KEENE joined other towns in New Hampshire along with other rural communities across America as part of the “Alliances for Victory” program which helped support war efforts abroad while minimizing contact with the military or civilian populations subject to enemy occupation or control.
