Beachwood was a small, unincorporated town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the east side of the Pascagoula River and surrounded by forested land. In 1821, when township boundaries were redrawn following creation of Burlington Township), beachwood Village Boardman Township Park District #3 (now Borough) was added to township boundaries. In 1838-39 three hotels were built along what is now State Road 322 in Alexander Hamilton: The Three Brothers Inn; The Hotel de Ville; and The Starlite Hotel & Casino *. These buildings are still standing today – one is currently used as a commercial property and two are used as residential units. It is interesting to note that both those businesses were started by men who had lost their job or homes during the Great Depression*fn1*. In fact*, many people who founded successful businesses during this time did so because they had lost everything they had - including their home or job security *fn2*. *fn1* For example*, restaurateur Jay Gatsby started his own restaurant business after being laid off from his previous job during the great depression while others such as Clark Clifford helped start major corporations like Chrysler etc.*fn3 *. *fn2* Similar stories can be found throughout Atlantic County with individuals losing everything due to economic hard times such as shipbuilder Sam Bassett who lost his entire family's fortune during prohibition*fn4 *. However*, despite these hardships many people continued to build successful businesses even during difficult times and this has continued into our current day
The Beachwood community was originally settled in 1795 by Dutch farmers and their families. The area became a part of the English colony of New Jersey in 1664. In 1839, the community was renamed Beachwood Township after its founder, General James Beattie. The township was formed from parts of Monmouth County and Ocean County.
