The first European settlers in Beachwood were Dutch colonists who founded a trading post in 1685 on what is now Route 46. In 1775, Colonel Edward Braddock's force attacked Fort Delaware near Newark and captured much of what is now Ocean County before being driven back by British forces at Monmouth Heights. At that time Bedminster had only 1 settler and there was no market for goods brought overland from Staten Island. A year later Commodore John Watson arrived with his squadron at Sandy Hook (now part of Newark) and discovered an oil well on Long Branch beach which led him to start drilling for oil in earnest on December 12th, 1776 under assumed names of "Watson & Company". The first wells were drilled rapidly so that local residents could get their hands on some supplies before General George Washington's army reached them! In 1824 an act was passed giving township status to Beachwood which then became one of three townships formed from portions of Belle Plain Township (the other two being Haddonfield and Englewood). On May 7th 1825 a special election resulted in the election becoming effective for all trustees as follows: "George Fenton (a trustee) - 4 acres; Isaac Hull (a trustee) - 2½ acres; Jeremiah Hubbard (a trustee) - ½ acre; Nicholas Appleton (an elector)" On January 1st 1829 commissioners appointed by Governor James Kapp recommended that all land within township limits be surveyed into lots measuring .50 miles square with each lot containing 10 rods width frontage and depth plus 3 rods height above water line...This proposal generated great excitement as it provided an opportunity for people who desired property within town limits but could not afford anything more than a field or patch near their house...The survey results were published in pamphlet form known as “The plat map” which soon became quite popular among those living within town limits because it showed how valuable land actually was." In 1830 Moses Greenough purchased 640 acres adjacent topresent-day Beachwood from Abram French for $1 million dollars In 1831 Samuel Morse bought 805 acres adjacent to present day Shore Road from Nicholas Appleton for $2 million dollars On November 11th 1830 Isaac Hull received title deed from Samuel Morseigeniority group totaling 673/4 acres including present day Park Boulevard between Hackensack Avenue South and Roosevelt Boulevard North valued at $10 million dollars Accordingly he commenced construction immediately upon receipt thereof."It should be noted that early beach dwellings were typically build offshore onto long barkspiles or straw bales--later replaced by clapboard buildings when better materials became available." With these purchases came new opportunities for waterfront development including: seashore fishing villages such as Brickport Landing named after vessels caught there such as HMS Beagle, HMS Dolphin etc.; whaling companies encouraged by President Andrew Jackson's encouragement during his term beginning February 20th 1833; shipbuilding yards built up along both Hackensack AvenueSouthwest corner Roosevelt BoulevardNorthwest corner Secaucus Avenueincluding Essex Dockyard & Company Shipbuilding Yard founded October 5th 1840; also:(Reederectory Wharf erected July 30th 1840),(Cranberry Point Light House erected October 15th 1840),(Fishkill Light House erected December 8th 1840),(Atlantic Terminal built December 14th 1850)."During this period many commercial enterprises flourished such as tanneries manufacturing raw hides until 1865 whenlimestone quarries went fully automated;"ection Street Merchant Marine Line established September 24TH1851 renamed Harbor Line RailroadJanuary 25TH1857," sand quarrying began operationMay 12TH1856," grove nursery operations started June 25TH1858," Pottersville Nursery opened March 26TH 1860,"First American Bank Established April 21ST 1860" finallyoil production ceased January 31ST 1870."Today Beach Wood still boasts some excellent establishments like Macy's Department Store (), Prudential Insurance Company (), Gilead Sciences Corporation (), Barclays Bank ()..."
