Beachwood is a borough in Atlantic County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 26,521. The name " Beachwood" was given to the community by Commodore Elisha Weems in 1855. At that time, Weems felt that a place called "Beachwood" would be a desirable location for citrus production because of its sandy soil and clear waters. In 1857, Weems donated $10 to cover the cost of building a school for the new community. The first public school opened in Beachwood on July 1, 1857. The Borough was formed on April 3rd, 1912 from portions of Franklin Township and South Brunswick Township. When it was formed it included parts of both Franklin and South Brunswick townships as well as all or part of: Bedminster, Cherry Hill Township (now Sayreville), East Brunswick Township (now Woodbridge Township), Glassboro Borough (now Parsippany), North Brunswick Township (now Harrington Heights), Ramsey Borough (now Plainsboro), Raritan Borough (now Toms River). On February 17th, 1951 an act were passed which changed the name from “Beachwood” to “Wakefield” effective March 15th following protracted efforts by residents and town officials to change their name to something more congruent with their surrounding communities. On May 25th; Beachwood residents voted 8-2 in support of changing their name back to “Beachwood” after lengthy consideration by governing body including members from surrounding municipalities who urged them do so due to close proximity at some points between Beachwood and those municipalities as well as shared history and heritage between them. As per NJS 02-23 § 4(c) which provides for boroughs within Atlantic County there must be three boards - one for planning & zoning; one for finance & budgeting; one for operations & maintenance - each having fifteen members appointed by governor with five voting members present minimum Accordingly on November 6th 2007 through unanimous vote by all boardmembers…..the Board voted 3-0 not to pursue any further changes beyond what has been proposed previously….beachwoods unique character will remain undisturbed
