Bellmawr, New Jersey is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bellmawr were Dutch colonists in 1624. The area was first settled by English Puritans in 1713 and land grants were given to them from William Penn. The town of Bethlehem was founded on the site of present-day Bellmawr in 1739. In 1814, New York and Pennsylvania merged into the United States and Bellmawr became part of Bergen County; it had a population of 5,588 as of the 2000 Census. In 1835, when a surveyor named George Washington surveyed parts of what is now Essex County, he noted that there was no village or post office near his proposed village called "Beillevin" (now Hightstown). He recommended that the name be changed to "Bellmawr" after Benjamin Franklin's home state of Virginia (then Massachusetts). Franklin approved and helped found the township on February 20, 1835. The borough was formed on April 14th 1908 from portions of Rahway Township and West Orange Township; it had a population of 6,977 as reported by the borough form 1909 which has since been revised to 7,898 . In 1932 Borough President Harry S Truman appointed Dr. James Fenton as its first Mayor; this position held until 1984 when it was eliminated due to term limits set forth by Borough Council members at that time - see below for more information about Mr Truman's appointment/termination etc.. On March 3rd 2017 with Town Board action Brain Demarest successfully petitioned for annexation into Edison Township - becoming one full member on an already large township! On December 8th 2017 with unanimous vote from all three Watchung residents groups they placed their referendum measure on November 3rd 2018 seeking annexation back into Watchung Township once again! This time however no annexations occurred

Bellmawr, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. The name was derived from the Celtic word blamara meaning "a small wood." The first Europeans to visit Bellmawr were French traders and missionaries who landed there on November 13, 1609 for trading purposes. On October 12 of that year, as part of a group of settlers led by Captain John Smith and his brother-in-law Sir William Penn (the Founder of Pennsylvania), they founded a new settlement called Fort Monmouth on Middle Neck Creek inside present-day Bellmawr Township. By 1701, the British had abandoned all their settlements in America except Newark; so when General George Washington arrived at Morristown on July 4th that year with his army to campaign against the British in this area (Washington's first major military engagement), he found only empty fields around Fort Monmouth. After wading through waist-deep waterlogged swamp without landing or disembarking his troops because of high tides caused by Hurricane Sandy two weeks earlier, he ordered Major James Hays to build a large brick fortification known today as George Washington Square within sight of Fort Monmouth which served as headquarters during the Battle of Princeton on September 26th,1777. In 1802–1803 Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry sailed upriver from Trenton and anchored outside what is now downtown Bellmawr while making an invasion attempt against Mexico City; according to one account Perry Dive bombed and set fire to several homes before being driven off by Mexican soldiers who used cannonball guns instead. However another account has Perry's flagship Acorn Reach anchoring just beyond where Randolph Street now lies about 200 yards upstream from modern day Main Street—right near what is now Guild House Museum—and not attacking any buildings ashore until after dark when Mexican boats tried unsuccessfully to land supplies on shoreline close below Acorn Reach Bridge leaving some wreckage still standing today! Consequently this event is often confused with Perry's Raid upon Mexico City described above despite no evidence supporting either version! In addition nearby Lockport played an important role during this time period as both a naval base for American shipping operations and also served as Monroe County seat starting in 1821 until it was moved to Trenton in 1824! bellmawr may have been named for one or more Englishmen killed during this raid Bellmawr became incorporated as a town on April 14th 1865 following an election held at which citizens voted 127–8 in favor of incorporation over petitioners who preferred remain unincorporated. As part of the westward expansionof America during the mid 1800s many small towns across rural America were annexed into larger municipalities including Bellmawr becoming section 771 under township form regulations adopted by the New Jersey Legislature on February 15th 1900 enumbrating all townships located east Of River Bergen “as if they had been incorporated into” Township form regulations effective March 1st *. Notwithstanding numerous protests from residents not wishing annexation their villages situated along freehold land within sections 2 & 3* continued under Township form regulations but subject nevertheless to referendum approval requirements * Section 2 comprised portions lying north Of River Bergen between Paterson & Mercer Streets* whereas sections 3 encompass most south And eastOfRiverBergen* * these protestations notwithstanding annexations took place throughout much OfNewJerseyduringthisperiod
The first settler in Bellmawr was Nicholas Bell, who arrived in 1764. The town was named for General John Bell, the founder of the Province of New Jersey. The first post office was established in 1777 and was located on the Plainfield road. In 1814, a new post office was built at the junction of Indian Path and Market Street. After the Civil War,Bellmawr grew rapidly as people moved into the area to take advantage of its fertile land and natural resources. By 1870,Bellmawr had a population of over 1,500 people and consisted of several buildings including a courthouse and jail. In 1885, a new railroad line linking Newark and Philadelphia reached Bellmawr, making it one of the fastest growing towns in New Jersey. By 1920,Bellmawr had more than 4,000 residents and consisted of several businesses including an insurance company and two banks. During World War II, Bellmawr played an important role in supplying munitions to Israel during their war against Nazi Germany.
