In 1827, Joseph Prentice renamed his farmstead "Collingwoods" after his parents' home village of Cranborne Chase near Salisbury, England. In 1854, David Crouse bought land northeast of present day Collingswood from Nicholas Prentice for $1 million dollars; this made Collingwoods one of the largestsingle purchases ever made by an individual in Middlesex County during that time period - larger than any purchase by Samuel Morse or Alfred Vail Jr.. Other large individual donations through this era include $5 million given to Princeton University by Sir James Buchanan in 1912; $10 million given to Rutgers University by Jacob Kligman in 1928; and $15 million given to Baruch College by Myron Hirschberg in 1972. During World War II, Collingswood served as one of two towns in Middlesex County that were liberated from Nazi occupation on May 6, 1945 by American troops Operation Overlord. As part of this effort, local men collaborated with the Americans to erect large billboards throughout the town reading "Welcome To Our liberated Town". In 1951–1952,Collingswood hosted the annual Summerfest which featured music and art festivals along with fireworks displays over Seaside Park Lake. In 1984–1985; $25 million was invested in expanding Seaside Park Lake which included new amusement park rides such as Splash Mountain and Cedar Point Adventure Coaster while also adding a new beachfront promenade that allowed pedestrians to walk between both attractions without going through security checkpoints
Collingswood was first settled in 1755 and became a town in 1812. In 1839, the township of Collingswood was created from parts of Middlesex County. It was renamed to Collingswood Township in 1881. The township has since been divided into two townships – Collingswood and Maple Shade.
