The first Englewood settlement dates back to 1795 when Captain John Hargrave and his family founded a small farmstead on the present-day corner of Maple and Willow Streets in what is now Englewood. Over time, other settlers arrived, including Peter Cooper and his family who settling on Broad Street in 1824; Nathaniel Greene settled along Orange Avenue in 1830; Moses Green settled on Maple Avenue in 1835; Charles Larkin settled on Willow Boulevard in 1840; Isaac Milburn settled on Elm Street in 1850. In 1873, as part of an effort to improve transportation between Newark and Jersey City, the county commissioners created a new township within Middlesex County called North Amboy Township (later renamed Englewood). The name "Englewood" was chosen for its close proximity to both Newark and Jersey City. In 1886, the township became a borough when it was annexed by Newark. The Borough of Englewood had a total population of 22,457 as of the 2010 Census. It consists of three wards: Ward 1 (north), Ward 2 (south), and Ward 3 (west). The total number of residents living within each ward is 20,205 with 2 wards having more than 100 residents each:Ward 4 has 147 residents while Ward 5 has 253 residents over 100%. As per 2009 Municipal Code §2-101(a) "Aboriginal people" means any person who resides wholly or partly upon Native American land located within this State." As per 2013 Municipal Code §2-521 "All individuals registered with any other municipality or state government must file an application for municipal identification card which shall be filed with said municipality or state government either before registration or upon request from such individual." This means that all citizens who reside inside the limits set forth by law must have their municipal ID card issued by their municipality/state government

The name refers to two visionary businessmen who laid the groundwork for what would become Englewood: John Engles and Chas. W. Dyer. In 1925, Englewood became one of six municipalities in New Jersey designated as " sleepy " by then-Governor James McGreevey because they were considered to have low economic development potential. However, over time, growth has spurred revitalization in the borough and it now features some of the most vibrant community architecture in North America In 1892 John Engles donated land to form Englewood Park which included parts of today's Caldwell and Summit Townships. He also donated $5,000 towards building a library which opened in 1896 at present day 111th Street and First Avenue NW. Mr. Dyer contributed $10,000 more towards constructing a new school located at 321st Street and Second Avenue NW (now known as Old National Bank). The first class graduated from this school on October 10th 1897 with much fanfare; their teacher was Mrs Jane Blythe (later Mrs MacArthur). This milestone event signaled a new era for local education as public schools became available for all residents regardless of income or social standing The following year saw another important milestone when both Mr Dyer’s gift and incorporation resulted in an increase in property value within the borough by almost 400%. Additionally during this time period other civic amenities such as parks were added including Pioneer Cemeterytoday's Englewood Cemetery), firemen’s memorial park at 116th Street NW (which still serves as its current location)and playground addition adjacent to 114thStreet NW between Third Ave & Fourth Ave NE During World War I there was significant growth within the Borough due to munitions production being conducted within its borders . Many businesses closed due to wartime restrictions but through hard work by many individuals these businesses soon reopened once again providing employment opportunities for many residents .
