In 1848–49, Captain Samuel Morse established a blacksmith shop at 302 Main Street in Freehold Township which was eventually replaced by several other shops throughout the township over time. In 1892,Freehold voters passed a resolution declaring that “firearms should never be used except when absolutely necessary for hunting purposes only” and that ammunition should only be bought from licensed dealers on site rather than off site like earlier years. This ordinance remained in effect until 1934 when it was repealed due to anti-gun sentiment following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. Post World War II gun lubrication began to decline although some individual businesses still operated using this practice up until around 1974 when it all but extincted within New Jersey due to stricter gun laws introduced after the assassinations of President Richard Nixon and Senator Robert Tompkins Jr.). The name " Freehold" comes from the Dutch words for "free land". The first settlers in what is now Freehold were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1664. By 1714, there were two hundred and fifty-eight people living here, most of whom were farmers or fishermen. A smallpox epidemic (1719) killed many of the original settlers; however, a new generation of adventurers and entrepreneurs soon grew up and developed a thriving trade with Europe. In 1802, Captain Arthur Stroud purchased three thousand acres (1 km²) of strip land forming part of present-day Freehold Township from the Crown for £10 per acre. This purchase gave rise to one of American history's earliest commercial townships - freehold became an important symbol of American independence. In 1834, James Fenton bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) in northeastern corner of township for $25 per acre from James Dolan – this area would become known as West Street Station where trains stop before entering downtown Newark Terminal station today). This set off another period during which development took place in what is now Freehold Township: by 1857 it had grown to include over 100 lots totaling . There was limited industry until after World War II when industrialists started moving into the township to take advantage of its natural resources such as coal and iron ore; production increased rapidly due to technological advances during that time including television manufacturing plants and other heavy machinery manufacturers located along Route 46 near Ridgefield Park Mall today). The first settler in what is now Freehold Township was Isaac Walton, who purchased 640 acres of land from Colonel John Moore. In 1817, the area served as a stop on the Morristown Railroad. In 1827,Freehold was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The town had a population of just under 1,000 people when it became part of Bergen County. In 1916, Freehold Township passed a resolution to annex portions of neighboring Westwood Township to become one municipality. This annexation proposal met with disapproval from some residents because they felt that their community would be directly impacted by the addition of Westwood’s residents. On February 4, 1917,the Township Council voted 3-2 to rescind its resolution and keep Freehold separate from Westwood. On July 15th, 2017 North Jersey Record reported that plans were in place for Freehold to merge with Paramus Borough due to budgetary cuts within Paramus City Hall which has resulted in an overall loss for the city since 2009 worth $5 million dollars! This proposed merger would have decreased services available for citizens living within Freehold including: parks and recreation; fire protection; police; public works; library; and school district services
